Workers'Compensation Rehabilitation Center

Workers’ Compensation Rehabilitation Centre is a NSSA institution which was established in 1971. Its primary objective is to provide clinical rehabilitation services to insured. This rather unique complex, the only one of its kind in Zimbabwe, comprises a number of departments located in the same campus and sharing a common administration department. These are, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Industrial clinic, Paraplegic Unit, Social work, Vocational Training, Maintenance, Kitchen and Laundry.

The Centre serves as a referral centre for patients derived from the whole country. It is situated in the city of Bulawayo, next to Mpilo Central Hospital and has a capacity of 200 at any given time with 80 of them being in-patients. The Centre delivers high quality and comprehensive clinical treatment, which includes therapeutic and skills training for injured workers to enable them speedy re-integration into society and work situations.

  • Provision of prostheses and other appliances
  • Private practice – arrangements can be made for non-work related injury cases to get rehabilitation in physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
  • Counselling is done throughout the rehabilitation process. This is aimed at preventing post-traumatic stress disorders and assist the injured worker to accept the disability so that he/she will be able to function optimally within the limitations placed upon him by the injury.
  • Job placement-vigorous efforts are made to restore performance skills needed on the job and prevent work related injuries through ergonomics and on site work evaluations. This is to enable the worker to cope and readjust back into the workplace with his/her new condition or state.
  • Repairs – Repairs are done for wheelchairs and other appliances.
  • Spirometry – testing lung functions
  • Audiometry-assessment of hearing
  • Medical stores and dispensary-supplying of drugs to injured workers
The NSSA Rehabilitation Centre aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with impairments and disabilities resulting from work related injuries and diseases. After full completion of prescribed programmes the worker should function optimally within the limitations placed upon him/her by the disabling impairment. The success of the rehabilitation programmes offered by the Centre depends on active participation by all stakeholders- especially the employer and family members of the injured worker.
